What is the conclusion to physical life? What is the final destination of mankind's existence on earth? As we all know, it is death, which is inescapable. But, then, what? What determines the final conclusion of it all? As we also know, it is determined by our decisions in this life. We are called today, and that means our names have been written in the Book of Life as Paul wrote in Phil 4:3 "…and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the Book of Life." Therefore, our decisions now are life and death decisions determining our eternal future. Those in the world seldom consider these except when they approach the end of life or during a major trial. Then they start thinking about these things.
One of the worst decisions made by men and women in a group called the Donner Party—a group of pioneers who set out for California in 1846. They decided to take a different route than was customary for safety. They took an untried path through the Wasatch Mountains and the Great Salt Lake Desert. This path caused many delays, causing the loss of wagons and cattle and led to divisions among the group. Many delays occurred. By the time they reached the Sierra Nevada Mountains, an early blizzard hit, and they were stranded from November 1846 until February 1847. With no food and starving, thirty-nine died. The survivors turned to cannibalism as the only way to remain alive. Truckee Lake is now called Donner Lake and the pass over the mountain is called Donner Pass. As I was driving to California through that pass many years ago, I was sobered by the thought of thinking if they had only made a different choice.
That is the lesson we must learn in the Body of Christ. We were called to think differently now while in the world and to make the best choices. That lesson is encompassed in the Tree of Life. That Tree of Life is and should be our goal for the conclusion to our lives. That can only be attained by overcoming to the end. "…To him who overcomes I will give to eat from the tree of life, which is in the midst of the Paradise of God." Rev 2:7. That means overcoming our past life in this world, becoming converted, and having our names written in the Book of Life. Then we must live the way of God until our end of days on this earth. There are no shortcuts, and God knows our way of life. "Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life." Gal 6:7-8.
The only way to endure to the end is by taking the path laid out by God using His Holy Spirit. It was given to us at Baptism, and if we move from Him, we get weaker. His spirit is available to us today, and in the future it will be offered to others. "And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life…"Rev 22:1-2. Seeing we have already eaten of the Tree of Life, where does our power to be sustained to the end come from? When we look at where the Tree gets its nourishment, then we can see in this analogy of where we get ours today. It is the river of living waters that has nourished us since the day we were baptized—that is assuming that we have stopped the way of the world and are following the path to His ultimate goal for us. "Blessed are those who do His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city. But outside are dogs and sorcerers and sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and whoever loves and practices a lie". Rev 22:14-15. The world does not understand that concept. There is the gulf between us and the world because they reject God's teaching and path to the Kingdom.
