In this world it seems no matter how much we seem to follow God's laws and His way, we do occasionally fail. That is something that seems to prey on the mind of a truly converted Christian. To those whom God's law and sin are not really a "big deal," they don't seem to be overly concerned with what they are doing and just go through life as usual, as my dad use to say about people like that, "fat, dumb and happy.” I think that was a very apt description.
To those who occasionally, and sometimes consistently, sin it can cause a feeling of God condemning us for what we have failed to do in following Him. But wait! Are we not human? Do we not have human nature? Are we not caught in a trap of following the way of this world? Yes! Are we not trying to work on changing our nature? God knows our nature. He knows where it comes from. Does that mean those sins have condemned us to Gehenna fire? No!
We are all sinners, God knows that. He recognizes we are sinners by nature. "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God," Rom 3:23. We must recognize our human frailties. We are weak and unable to change without help from somewhere. So what do we do about that? God, knowing our inability to change, has provided a way. That is the prime lesson of the Old Testament—without God's Spirit we are unable to change. That is why, in one of the most encouraging and well known messages of Jesus Christ, He states. "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." John 3:16.
That is the reason that Jesus Christ came to this world and called us—so we would not be assigned to death forever, but to have eternal life as part of the family, the Family of God. It’s the only family that will exist forever. “For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.” John 3:17.
A young lady mentioned the other day that the family she married into was so wonderful because of the love they exhibited to one another and the way they treated one another. That is what we look forward to. The love of God is
deeply imbedded in human beings, called by God, who sin but have an attitude of not wanting to sin again.
With Christ in the picture, it now becomes not about the sins we commit, but about our attitude of sin. We have to hate sin. We cannot just not sin. We must hate the fact that we do sin and hurt others. If we have an attitude we can do to others what we want for our pleasure and have no compunction about doing it, then our attitude is wrong. If we do, soon our conscience will be seared, and then Gehenna fire is ahead for us. "To the pure all things are pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; but even their mind and conscience are defiled." Titus 1:15.
Do we have the attitude of the apostle Paul who wrote in the letter to the Romans "For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man." Rom 7:22. Inward man is the spirit within us. Yes, we sin, and we should hate the sin, not ourselves. To hate sin is a fervent desire to change to the way of God— not continue to hide our sins. God sees all, and He is the only One we need to repent to. God is anxious to forgive us, not to condemn His sons and daughters.
